The
Division of Nursing oversees the nursing staff at Howard
University Hospital. The nurses support the clinical
departments. There are several units and departments
under the Division of Nursing.

Acute Dialysis Unit
Provides

Dialysis Unit
Provides
hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments on an
outpatient basis. Can accommodate 130 hemodialysis
patients.

Critical Care Units
Critical Care Units at HUH have earned a reputation for
providing safe quality care with a focus on service
excellence and patient satisfaction. Our 10-bed state-of-the-art high technology SICU, 14-bed MICU and 4 bed
CCU provide a warm and welcoming environment for
patients and their families and an excellent learning
environment that is collaborative, collegial and a
healthy work environment for our nursing staff. Our
critical care units provide care for patients who have had major surgeries, trauma victims, chronic unstable
illness, acute medical illness, acute MI’s and more.

Medical Surgical Units

Neurology Unit
Provides
care for patients with closed head, spinal cord, and
back injuries, stroke, epilepsy, fractures and certain
major trauma. From admission to discharge patient care
is evaluated through a multidisciplinary approach.

Perioperative Services

The
Department of Perioperative Services at Howard
University Hospital provides a variety of procedures for
patients from pediatrics to geriatrics. Howard
University Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center open
seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The Perioperative
Services Operating Room and Endoscopy Suites are located
in the basement of the main hospital and consist of 10
operating rooms and three endoscopy rooms. Two
Cystoscopy rooms are located on the fourth floor, which
are available for surgical, endoscopic and cystoscopic
procedures. Elective surgical procedures in the
operating room begin at 7:45 a.m. Monday through Friday
and at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Only emergency cases are
performed on Sundays.The Endoscopy and Cystoscopy suites
are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m.

Professional Development
The
Department of Professional Development and Quality
Management offers a variety of educational opportunities
designed to meet the learning needs of nursing staff,
both novices and experts. The American Nurses
Credentialing Center has recognized our quality nursing
education offerings by nationally accrediting us as a
provider of continuing education in nursing. This is an
important nursing accreditation that advances the
nursing profession. In addition to providing high
quality educational programs, the Department of
Professional Development and Quality Management directs
and coordinates quality improvement activities in
collaboration with nursing staff and other health care
disciplines with a goal of developing comprehensive
plans to assess, analyze and evaluate clinical and
operational processes and outcomes.

Psychiatry Units
At HUH,
nurses assist physicians with the application of
psychotherapy to renew the mind and restore the soul. They
assist patients who are coping with behavioral and mental
illness including life issues such as traumatic loss,
damaged relations, bipolar, mood and anxiety disorders and
substance abuse. They assist physicians in providing
expert management of symptoms and the very best
therapeutic treatment on a 24/7 basis.

Oncology Inpatient Area
Provides
quality patient care for the adult patient who has been
diagnosed with cancer and who is some phase of active
treatment. The area is designed to create an environment
of serenity, healing and comfort.

Outpatient Clinics
Welcome to more than 24 outpatient clinics that meet
patient’s need for comfortable setting, convenient hours and
little wait time. Each of the 24 clinics has a caliber
of medical and nursing staff that possess in-depth
knowledge and training to diagnose and treat most, if not
all medical conditions from the routine diabetic
follow-up to invasive monitoring during blood
transfusion for sickle cell anemia. At HUH, the out
patient clinics services are well utilized by patients
from diverse backgrounds and from neighborhoods that are
in and far outside of the hospital and university
campuses. The outpatient services have a clinic to meet
just about every condition: cancer, skin disorders,
orthopedic, cardiology, general medicine, ophthalmology
and many, many others. The nurses that work outpatient
clinics enjoy excellent pay, all weekends and holidays
off, fast-paced work, professional recognition,
supportive staff, and a clean and friendly work environment.

Telemetry Units
At HUH we have two state-of-the-art cardiac telemetry
units, 28-bed and 17 bed respectively, with monitor
technicians 24/7. The telemetry units are fast-pace,
efficient and we provide safe, effective quality care.
The units are warm and welcoming and foster an
environment of growth through a learning/teaching
environment. We provide comprehensive services to the
cardiac patient to include pain and rhythm management,
pre and post -percutaneous coronary intervention,
electrophysiology and other cardiac intervention care.
